Tatting on 'The Paradise'

The BBC drama 'The Paradise' has just aired on Singapore's Okto Channel (Friday 10pm). I have been following it. On the first episode, I caught a glimpse of tatting on Katherine's dress. It looked rather elegant.

  1. HURRAY for such a lovely tatted edging clearly visible on Katherine's dress. Thank you for sharing your find. Now I will be on the look-out too!

  2. Well spotted! Watched the series but never spotted this one, however, there is a black choker coming up which could be tatting. It is a really terriffic drama.

  5. Very observant! I have looked in vain on any movie, ot TV series, especially those depicting the Victorian era or beyond, to see if any of the actresses tatted or pretended to - but no luck. Books on which some movies were based do mention tatting, but it was never shown in the movie. Knitting, crocheting and sewing are, of course, more common to see. In fact it was an old movie where I first saw someone knit Continental style, and I didn't know what it was called (back in 1964), but I found it was very efficient. It was rare to see in America, which knitted the 'British' way. But I immediately embraced it.

This is the first I've heard of this show and was surprised that several epiosodes at the moment are available on YouTube, so I saw this dress. The quality of the production is amazing - costumes, sets, etc. And a look at the beginnings of the big department stores and the concept of 'ready-made' clothes, not to mention the issues that women faced, plus class distinctions. Thanks for alerting me to it!
